I bought Rocksmith about two weeks ago but finally really got to play it today. I bought it off Amazon to save 20$ which is fine but free shipping takes over a week which is also fine because I'm in no hurry. But when I got the 'game' it came with a defective cable so I had to send it back and got my new one in the mail today. Hey, remember way back ages ago when I put the little ' marks around the word game earlier? Yeah those were fun times... but I digress. I did that because I don't really know what to call this thing. I use the word game because I put a disc into my XBox 360 so I guess we'll leave it at that. About a year ago I bought a guitar, I owned one when I was a teenager but I never really sunk my teeth into it and after a few years of gathering dust sold it. So now I own a new guitar and try to practice but I lose interest quickly and can't afford lessons so I figured a game type scenario that will encourage and hopefully help me to practice would be great. So far I have no idea what to make of this thing. The nuts and bolts of this thing scream that it's the first game in a series but at the same time it was made by Ubisoft so who knows. The menu system is awful and there's some other issues that irk me like how when it saves a big SAVING box pops on the screen and you can't do anything else until it's done autosaving. Games doing autosaves in the background should be a universal thing at this point. The in-game screen is pretty clean looking but telling which fret you're on can get confusing especially if you're a beginner like me. Speaking of difficulty the game decides that on its own which sounds great but it's not. So much of learning an instrument is playing the same thing over and over again until it becomes mechanical but Rocksmith keeps changing up the sequence of notes to adapt to your skill level so every time you play a song it's different, changing multiple times DURING the song. So you're looking down the track on the screen getting ready for what's coming and you miss a note and the part you were looking up at suddenly changes to something else because the game tuned the difficulty down. Yeah, super frustrating. There's some mini games that help you practice fundamental techniques, some of which are awesome, some are ok and some flat out suck. Lag issues, and there will be some slight lag, severely hurt the mini games and the game's tutorials are ok but will never substitute for having a person in front of you showing you the technique. But at the end of the day it did make me play my guitar for two hours which I suppose is a good thing, I just don't know yet if those two hours were spent with earnest practice or developing bad habits.
Also, my fingers hurt.
